It’s no big surprise that what you eat before and after a workout is extremely important. Eating crap and working out hard won’t get you the body of your dreams anytime fast. Fueling your body with the right nutrients will maximize your results and get you toned up!
Here are some tips I always tell my private clients..
Carbs are not the enemy..
Carbs = energy. When we eat them, they break down into glucose, enter our muscle cells, and give us fuel to exercise at our max!!! If you don’t have enough glucose, you will most likely feel weak, tired, and will want to call it quits. Before a workout, it’s good to eat simple carbohydrates, because they are digested fast and provide quick energy.
Examples include: A granola bar, a piece of fruit (I love apples pre workout!), oatmeal, Greek yogurt (this contains carbs and protein), a rice cake, and a piece of toast.
Along with eating your carbs, having a bit of protein before your workout is a good idea. When we exercise (lifting weights), we actually are creating small tears in our muscle! (crazy, right?) With protein, it helps the muscles heal and grow even stronger… and that’s exactly what we want! Try having nuts, nut butters, Greek yogurt or eggs before you workout.
Here are a few different snacks/meals you should try out!
Snack: VEGA Snack Bar (200Cals)
Snack: 1-2 rice cakes topped with 1 tablespoon of nut butter
Meal: Oatmeal with a tablespoon of peanut butter and ½ cup of fruit
Meal: 4-ounces of baked salmon, ¾ cup of brown rice, with 1 cup of roasted veggies
You need to eat after your workout. Eating right away will help in the aid in the revery of your muscles and help restore your glycogen because it definitely has just been depleted after that bad ass workout you just did! If you aren’t able to eat a meal right away, have a protein shake within 20 minutes of your workout! I LOVE and live by VEGASPORT Protein. They have all clean and natural products that will aid in recovery and get you one step closer to your goals.
These are only guidelines..
The best thing about it, is that everyone is different. They will have different specific needs and preferences. We all want to live our best lives and have the body of our dreams. It takes time to really figure out your body and what it likes. We are all not built the same!
They call it a ‘fitness journey’ because there are loads of ups and downs and that’s totally normal and okay! You need to figure out what YOUR body wants and needs.. what someone might like and may work for them.. you may not like it and it could totally not work for you!
